An official heatwave means five or more days in a row when the daily maximum temperature beats the average maximum temperature by five degrees.

The average high for the city in November is 21 degrees.

MetService meteorologist Alwyn Bakker said Napier only recorded 25.2 degrees yesterday.

The temperature needed to top 26 degrees for it to be declared a heatwave.

The highest temperature in the city over the last few days was 29 degrees on Sunday.
